Introduction

Head injury or head trauma occurs when there is an outside object that hits the head causing a blow or trauma into the head. It can be very hard objects or anything that can crack or fracture the skull such as a bullet from a gunshot. This may result in various clinical complications which can be from simple acute concussions to life-threatening traumatic and severe head contusions. The injuries related to these patients must be assessed quickly in the hospital for accurate management and treatment.

Symptoms

There are several symptoms that a patient with head trauma must observe. Go to the nearest hospital if there is a loss of consciousness, severe headache, nausea and vomiting to name a few. These are signs that there might be a trauma up to the brain. If there is any bleeding or blood oozing on the head or in the ear which can be a sign again of trauma.

For the children who had a head injury, the family must assess their child and search for the following symptoms: easy irritability, crying consistently (indicative of pain), change in the way they sleep, sudden loss of not being interested in their favorite things.

Nursing Interventions for Head Injury

The nurse must be able to handle and care for both a stable patient with a head injury and a critical patient with head injury. For stable patients, the nurse can asses s the patient. If there is a direct trauma to the skull, the nurse can apply and provide pressure to prevent major blood loss and then apply and bandage around the head. The nursing staff can also help the patient prepare for diagnostic procedures such as Skull X-ray and CT-scan. For critical patients, the nurse must continuously monitor the vital signs of the patient and give the appropriate medications. Nurses can prepare the patient for immediate surgery if there is an order in the hospital. Accurate and constant assessment is needed for these kinds of patients. For post-op cerebral surgery patients, they must be placed in ICU for medical support and care by the staff. The nurse may use drugs per doctor’s order to decrease the inflammation of the brain, to induce temporary coma as well as give anti-seizure drugs to prevent unwanted end complications. Rehabilitation may be used to restore the physical strength and health of the patient prior to being discharged at home. Lastly health education must be an integral part of the nursing care plan.
